Darkness

What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight;
what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.
Matthew 10:27

At times God put us through the discipline of darkness to teach us to heed him.
Song birds are taught to sing in the dark, and we are put into the shadow of
God’s hand until we learn to hear Him… Are you in the dark just now in your
circumstances, or in your life with God? Then remain quiet. If you open your
mouth in the dark, you will talk in the wrong mood: darkness is the time to
listen. Don’t talk to other people about it; don’t read books to find out the reason
of the darkness, but listen and heed. If you talk to other people, you cannot
hear what God is saying. When you are in the dark, listen, and God will give you very
precious message for someone else when you get into light.

After every time of darkness there comes a mixture of delight and humiliation…
What a long time I was in hearing that! How slow I have been in understanding that!
And yet God has been saying it all these days and weeks. Now He gives you the gift
of humiliation which brings the softness of heart that will always listen to God now.

Music

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness,

Gaiety and life to everything.
It is the essence of order and lends to all that is good and just and beautiful.

Plato (born c. 428–423 BC, died 348/347 BC)

A Voice

A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare
the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness
a highway for our God.

Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill
made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged
places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the
Lord has spoken.”

Isaiah 40:3-5

Your Word

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Psalm 119:105

Today Beyond Tomorrow

Today

Rows of pansies dance
in garden with sun and breeze
purple and pink play

Beyond

Blue sky vast beyond
clouds float aimlessly along
we will be there soon

Tomorrow

Sunset colors day
dusk brings the calm peace of hope
for tomorrow’s rise

The Lord Is Near

The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and loving toward all he has made. The Lord
is near to all who call on him, to all
who call on him in truth. He fulfills
the desires of those who fear him;

he hears their cry and saves them.
The Lord watches over all who love him,

but all the wicked he will destroy.

Psalm 145:17-20

The Land Of The Shadow

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;

on those living in the land of the shadow of death a
light has dawned

Isaiah 9:2

Do Not Fret

Do not fret because of evil men or be envious
of those who do wrong;

for like the grass they will soon wither,

like green plants they will soon die away.

Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will
give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:1-4

We Will Not Fear

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though
the earth give way and the mountains
fall into the heart of the sea, though
its waters roar and foam and the
mountains quake with their surging.

Psalm 46:1-3

How awesome is the Lord Most High,
the great King over all the earth!

He subdued nations under us,
peoples under our feet.

Psalm 47: 2,3

Your Path

Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.

Psalm 77:19

And the sea appears to be the most trackless of worlds! The sea is the very symbol of mystery, the grim dwelling-house of the innumerable things that have been lost. But God’s way moves here and there across this trackless wild. God is never lost among our mysteries. He knows His way about. When we are bewildered He sees the road, and He sees the end even from the beginning. Even the sea, in every part of it, is the Lord’s highway. When His way is in the sea we cannot trace it. Mystery is part of our appointed discipline.

J.H. Jowett (from Daily Meditation. 1914)
