Good Will

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

“And when the Lord Jesus has become your peace, remember, there is another thing: good will towards men.

Do not try to keep Christmas without good will towards men.” –

Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)

I know there is a hope in religion; I know there is faith and I know there is prayer about religion and necessary to it,

but God is most glorified when there is peace on earth and good will towards men. Frederick Douglass (1818-1895)

Apart from God – Orphans

A little acquaintance with our own hearts will force us to acknowledge that there is no hope within us,

and the briefest glance around should show us that we need expect no help from without.

Nature itself will teach us that (apart from God) we are but orphans of the creation, waifs of the wide spaces, caught helpless amid the whirl of forces too great to comprehend.

Onward through this world roars an immense and sightless power leaving in its wake generations, cities, civilizations.

The earth, our brief home, offers us at last only a grave.

For us there is nothing safe, nothing kind.

In the Lord there is mercy, but in the world there is none,

for nature and life move on as if unaware of good or evil,

of human sorrow

or human pain.

The Divine Conquest p.56

The Finger of God

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8: 3,4

When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

Exodus 31:18

In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept questioning him, he straightened up and said to them,”If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

John 8: 5-8

A Famine

“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land –

not a famine of food or thirst for water,

but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.

Men will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east,

searching for the word of the Lord,

but they will not find it.”
Amos 8: 11,12

“The seers will be ashamed and the diviners disgraced.

They will all cover their faces because there is no answer from God.” Micah 3:7

God’s World

We should always look upon ourselves as God’s servants,

placed in God’s world, to do his work;

and accordingly labour faithfully for him;

not with a design to grow rich and great,

but to glorify God, and do all the good we possibly can.

David Brainerd (1718-1747)

Find Life

“My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.
Do not let them out of your sight,

keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
Proverbs 4: 20-23

“Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.

Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.

Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”
Proverbs 4: 25-27

“For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord.

But whoever fails to find me harms himself;

all who hate me love death. ” Proverbs 8: 35, 36

Stand At The Crossroads

This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;

ask for the ancient paths,

ask where the good way is, and walk in it,

and you will find rest for your souls.” Jeremiah 6: 16a

Human Rules

“ ‘These people honor me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me.

They worship me in vain;

their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ ”
Matthew 15:8-9

Feast Of Fat Things

It is true; the word is preached to all the world, to gather in the children of God’s purpose that are scattered up and down in the world {John 11:52}

and to leave the rest inexcusable;

but the prime end and aim of the Lord Christ thereby is to gather in those heirs of salvation unto the enjoyment of that feast of fat things which he has prepared for them in his house. …

John Owen (1616 – 1683)
from Communion with the Triune God p.346
edited by Kelly M. Kapic and Justin Taylor

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved,

but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” Matthew 16: 15,16

In The Roar Of Your Waterfalls

Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

Deep calls to deep

in the roar of your waterfalls;

all your waves and breakers
have swept over me. Psalm 42:5-8
