Of Their Own Conscience

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for
the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.
It would be better to live under robber barons than
under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s
cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some
point be satiated; but those who torment
us for our own good will torment us without end for
they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

C.S. Lewis (1898-1963)

A State of Civilization

If a nation expects to be ignorant and free,
in a state of civilization, it expects what
never was and never will be. ―

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

Unite

“I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.”
― Frederick Douglass (1818-1895)

A Majority

“A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become
right, and evil doesn’t become good, just because
it’s accepted by a majority.”

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915)

The Noblest Cause

“The greatest tyrannies are always perpetuated
in the name of the noblest cause.”

Thomas Paine (1737-1809)

He Deceives Himself

If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing,
he deceives himself.

Galatians 6:3

The Earth

See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it;
he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants—
it will be the same for priest as for people,
for master as for servant,
for mistress as for maid,
for seller as for buyer,
for borrower as for lender,
for debtor as for creditor.

The earth will be completely laid waste and
totally plundered.
The Lord has spoken this word.

The earth dries up and withers,
the world languishes and withers,
the exalted of the earth languish.
The earth is defiled by its people,
they have disobeyed the laws,
violated the statutes and broken the
everlasting covenant.

Therefore a curse consumes the earth;
its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,
and very few are left.

Isaiah 24:1-6

Next Generation

Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God,
till I declare your power to the next generation, your might
to all who are to come.

Psalm 71:18

I will sing of the love of the Lord forever; with my
mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all
generations.

Psalm 89:1

It Is not Enough

It is not enough to be right; one must know how to be right.

Machado de Assis (1839-1908)

The Functionaries

“Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be
truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men,
the functionaries ready to believe and to act without
asking questions.” ―

Primo Levi (1919-1987)
