Courage

“Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities… because it is the quality which guarantees all others.”

Aristotle (384-322BC)

Do Not Remain Silent

“We demand complete disestablishment of the Church
so as to be able to combat the religious fog with
purely ideological and solely ideological weapons.”

Vladimir Lenin (1860-1924)

O God, do not remain silent; be not quiet, O God,
be not still. See how your enemies astir, how
your foes rear their head. With cunning they
conspire against your people; they plot against
those you cherish.

Psalm 83:1-3

May they ever be ashamed and dismayed; may they
perish in disgrace. Let them know that you, whose
name is the Lord—that you alone are the
Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 83:17-18

A World of Conflict

“In such a world of conflict, a world of victims and
executioners, it is the job of thinking people, not
to be on the side of executioners.”

Albert Camus (1913-1960)

Conventions of Politics

“The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and
its instruments are individual human beings, and that these
individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions
of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own.”

Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

Brother’s Sword

“Unhappy it is though to reflect, that a Brother’s Sword has been
sheathed in a Brother’s breast, and that, the once happy and peaceful
plains of America are either to be drenched with Blood, or Inhabited
by Slaves. Sad alternative! But can a virtuous Man hesitate in his
choice?”

George Washington (1732-1799)

Patriotism/Freedom/Virtue

“Upon my return from the army to Baltimore in the winter of 1777,
I sat next to John Adams in Congress, and upon my whispering to
him and asking him if he thought we should succeed in our struggle
with Great Britain, he answered me, “Yes-if we fear God and repent
of our sins.”

“Patriotism is as much a virtue as justice, and is as necessary for
the support of societies as natural affection is for the support of families.”

“Freedom can exist only in the society of knowledge. Without learning, men
are incapable of knowing their rights.”

“Without Virtue there can be no liberty.”

“There is but one method of rendering a republican form of government
durable, and that is by disseminating the seeds of virtue and knowledge through
every part of the state by means of proper places and modes of education and this
can be done effectively only by the aid of the legislature.”

— Benjamin Rush (1746-1813)

I have no reason to suppose that he, who would take away my Liberty,
would not when he had me in his Power, take away everything else.
John Locke (1632-1704)

If you are going to walk with Jesus Christ,
you are going to be opposed … In our days,
to be a true Christian is really to become a
scandal.
George Whitefield (1714-1770)

To argue with a person who has renounced the use of
reason is like administering medicine to the dead.
Thomas Paine (1737-1809)

It is in the interest of tyrants to reduce the people to ignorance
and vice. For they cannot live in any country where virtue and
knowledge prevail.
Samuel Adams (1722-1803)

Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must
begin by subduing the freeness of speech.
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history,
whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a
small elite.
Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

Twas Mercy

‘’Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand That
there’s a God, that there’s a Saviour too. “

Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784)

Comrade

To-day we have substituted credal belief for personal belief,
and that is why so many are devoted to causes and so few devoted
in Jesus Christ. People do not want to be devoted to Jesus, but
only to the cause He started. Jesus Christ is a source of deep
offence to the educational mind of today that does not want Him
in any other way than as a Comrade.
