The Disciplines of Life

When God wants to drill a man,
And thrill a man.
And skill a man To play the noblest part;
When He yearns with all His heart
To create so great and bold a man
That all the world shall be amazed,
Watch His methods, watch His ways!
How He ruthlessly perfects
Whom He royally elects!
How He hammers him and hurts him,
And with mighty blows converts him
Into trial shapes of clay which
Only God understands;
While his tortured heart is crying
And he lifts beseeching hands!
How He bends but never breaks
When his good He undertakes;
How He uses whom He chooses,
And with every purpose fuses him;
By every act induces him
To try His splendor out-
God knows what He’s about.

Shallows and Deeps

In the divine Scriptures, there are shallows and there are deeps;
shallows where the lamb may wade,

and deeps where the elephant may swim.

John Owen (1616-1683)

Spiritual Secret

“Men return again and again to the few who have mastered
the spiritual secret, whose life has been hid with Christ
in God. These are of the old time religion, hung to the
nails of the Cross.”

Robert Murray McCheyne (1813-1843)

The Resurrection

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid,
for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was
crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as
he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

Matthew 28:5-6

Holy Week

“But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:5
