Little Ones

“And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,

it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with
a large millstone tied around his neck.”
Mark 9:42

“But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believes
in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone
hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”
Matthew 18:6

Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people
to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through
whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown
into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than
for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.
So watch yourselves.

A Fleeting Shadow

Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.

Psalm 144:4

You have made my days a mere handbreadth;

the span of my years is as nothing before you.

Each man’s life is but a breath. Man is a mere phantom as

he goes to and fro:

He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth,

not knowing who will get it.
Psalm 39:5-6

The Cup

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too;

you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.

1 Corinthians 10:21

From the Pit

Praise the Lord, O my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and
forget not all his benefits.

He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases;
he redeems my life from the pit
and crowns me with love and compassion.

He satisfies my desires with good things,
so that my youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.

He made known his ways to Moses,
his deeds to the people of Israel:
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

Psalm 103: 1-8

The Light of the World

” They came with torches to capture the light of the world

and they came with swords to arrest the Prince of Peace.”

William Hendriksen (1900-1982)

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.

John 8:12-15

The Days Are Evil

                                     Be very careful,

then,

                                                            how you live-

not as unwise

but as wise,

making the most of every opportunity,

because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5:15,16

Unspiritual

But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts,

do not boast about it or deny the truth.

Such “wisdom” does not come

down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.

For where you have envy and selfish ambition,

there you find

disorder and every evil practice.

James 3:14-16

If Ye…Countrymen

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude
better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace.
We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which
feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget
that ye were our countrymen.”

-Samuel Adams (1722-1803)

The Ravens

Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tisbe in Gilead,
said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives,
whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain
in the next few years except at my word.”

Then the word of the Lord
came to Elijah: “Leave here, turn eastward and hide
in the ravine of Kerith, east of the Jordan.

You will
drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to
feed you there.”

So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the
ravine of Kerith, east of the Jordan, and stayed there.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning,
and bread and meet in the evening, and he drank from
the brook.

1 Kings 17:1-6

Your Word

Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.

Psalm 119:105

I have suffered much; renew my life, O Lord, according to your word.

Psalm 119:107

Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law.

Psalm 119:109

My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.
Psalm 119:112
