The Lord Almighty

” The Lord was very angry with your forefathers. Therefore
tell the people: this is what the Lord Almighty says:
‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, “and I will
return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty.
Zechariah 1:2,3

But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded
my servants the prophets, overtake your forefathers? “Then
they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to use
what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.’ ”
Zechariah 1:6

Complaint/Answer

Habakkuk’s Complaint

How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?
Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong?

Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in
the righteous, so that justice is perverted.

The Lord’s Answer

“Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe,
even if you were told.
I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people,
who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwelling places not their own.

They are a feared and dreaded people; they are a law to themselves
and promote their own honor.
Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves at dusk.
Their cavalry gallops headlong; their horsemen come from afar. They fly
like a vulture swooping to devour; they all come bent on violence.

Their hordes advance like a desert wind and gather prisoners like sand.
They deride kings and scoff at rulers. They laugh at all fortified cities; they
build earthen ramps and capture them. Then they sweep past like the wind
and go on—guilty men, whose own strength is their god.”

Habakkuk 1:2-11

Delight In Your Law

Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law.
It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.

The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces
of silver and gold.

Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding
to learn your commands.

Psalm 119:70-73

The Days Are Coming

What does it matter if I go not to God’s Word to seek
The truth, of that which I glibly speak, And the need
for His guiding hand on my earthly way-Does it really
matter just what I may say? – Selected

“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “when
I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of
food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the
words of the LORD.

Men will stagger from sea to sea and
wander from north to east, searching for the word of the
LORD, but they will not find it.”

Amos 8:11,12

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible
and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things
were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in
him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church;
he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything
he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness
dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether
things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood,
shed on the cross.

Colossians 1:15-20

The Magi

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from
them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them
to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search
for the child. As soon as you find him, report
to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way,
and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them
until it stopped over the place where the child was. When
they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
On coming to the house, they saw the child with His mother Mary,
and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened
their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and
of incense and of myrrh.

Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not
return to Herod, they departed for their own country another
way.

Matthew 2:7-12

The Shepherds

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch
over their flocks at night.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and
the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But
the angel said to them,

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy
that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David
a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will
be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and
lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared
with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace to men on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them
and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

“Let’s go to
Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has
told us about.”

Luke 2:8-15

Evil Done Well

“Evil is never done so thoroughly or so well as when it is
done with a good conscience.”

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662)

The Last Days

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful,
proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal,
not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God—

having a form of godliness but
denying its power. Have nothing to do with such them.

2 Timothy 3:1-5

In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus
will be persecuted,

while evil men and impostors will go from bad
to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

2 Timothy 3:12,13
